333 <title>Upgrading from previous releases of &os;</title>
336 <title>Upgrading using &man.freebsd-update.8; or a source-based
339 <para arch="amd64,i386">Beginning with &os; 6.2-RELEASE, binary
340 upgrades between RELEASE versions (and snapshots of the
341 various security branches) are supported using the
342 &man.freebsd-update.8; utility. The binary upgrade procedure
343 will update unmodified userland utilities, as well as an
344 unmodified <filename>GENERIC</filename> kernel, distributed as
345 a part of an official &os; release. The
346 &man.freebsd-update.8; utility requires that the host being
347 upgraded have Internet connectivity.</para>
349 <para>Source-based upgrades (those based on recompiling the &os;
350 base system from source code) from previous versions are
351 supported using to the instructions in
352 <filename>/usr/src/UPDATING</filename>.</para>

368 system configuration which you might want to know before
