549 (and snapshots of the various security branches) are supported
550 using the &man.freebsd-update.8; utility. The binary upgrade
551 procedure will update unmodified userland utilities, as well
552 as an unmodified <filename>GENERIC</filename> kernel,
553 distributed as a part of an official &os; release. The
554 &man.freebsd-update.8; utility requires that the host being
555 upgraded have Internet connectivity.</para>
557 <para>Source-based upgrades (those based on recompiling the &os;
558 base system from source code) from previous versions are
559 supported using to the instructions in
560 <filename>/usr/src/UPDATING</filename>.</para>
