320 <title>Upgrading from previous releases of &os;</title>
323 <title>Upgrading using &man.freebsd-update.8; or a source-based
326 <para arch="amd64,i386">Beginning with &os; 6.2-RELEASE, binary
327 upgrades between RELEASE versions (and snapshots of the
328 various security branches) are supported using the
329 &man.freebsd-update.8; utility. The binary upgrade procedure
330 will update unmodified userland utilities, as well as an
331 unmodified <filename>GENERIC</filename> kernel, distributed as
332 a part of an official &os; release. The
333 &man.freebsd-update.8; utility requires that the host being
334 upgraded have Internet connectivity.</para>
336 <para>Source-based upgrades (those based on recompiling the &os;
337 base system from source code) from previous versions are
338 supported using to the instructions in
339 <filename>/usr/src/UPDATING</filename>.</para>

355 system configuration which you might want to know before
356 upgrading your system. <emphasis>Please read this section and

359 submitting a problem report and/or posting a question to the
