  41 is a tool used in building 4.4BSD system images (the UNIX kernel).
  42 It takes a file describing a system's tunable parameters and
  43 hardware support, and generates a collection
  44 of files which are then used to build a copy of UNIX appropriate
  45 to that configuration.

  47 simplifies system maintenance by isolating system dependencies
  48 in a single, easy to understand, file.

  50 This document describes the content and
  51 format of system configuration
  52 files and the rules which must be followed when creating
  53 these files.  Example configuration files are constructed
  54 and discussed.

  56 Later sections suggest guidelines to be used in modifying
  57 system source and explain some of the inner workings of the
  58 autoconfiguration process.  Appendix D summarizes the rules
  59 used in calculating the most important system data structures
  60 and indicates some inherent system data structure size
  61 limitations (and how to go about modifying them).
