  40 This report describes the internal structure of
  41 facilities added to the
  42 4.2BSD version of the UNIX operating system for
  43 the VAX,
  44 as modified in the 4.4BSD release.
  45 The system facilities provide
  46 a uniform user interface to networking
  47 within UNIX.  In addition, the implementation
  48 introduces a structure for network communications which may be
  49 used by system implementors in adding new networking
  50 facilities.  The internal structure is not visible
  51 to the user, rather it is intended to aid implementors
  52 of communication protocols and network services by
  53 providing a framework which
  54 promotes code sharing and minimizes implementation effort.

  57 language and system interface, as described in the
  58 \fIBerkeley Software Architecture Manual, 4.4BSD Edition\fP [Joy86].

  65 avoiding, when possible, those portions which are utilized only
